President Obama on Friday announced a 1.3 percent pay raise for military members next year, a level that’s less than what’s specified under the law.

The change to monthly basic pay will take effect Jan. 1.

“This decision is consistent with my fiscal year 2016 Budget and it will not materially affect the Federal Government’s ability to attract and retain well-qualified members for the uniformed services,” Obama wrote in an Aug. 28 letter to congressional leaders.

The presidential order is consistent with the Pentagon’s proposed budget for fiscal 2016, which begins Oct. 1.

The spending plan called for a pay raise of 1.3 percent rather than the 2.3 percent estimated increase in private sector-wage growth, which military pay is supposed to track by law. The 1.3 percent figure is slightly higher than the 1 percent pay increase that service members have received the past two years.

While Senators on a key defense panel agreed with the administration’s military pay proposal, Republicans on the counterpart panel in the House of Representatives supported a higher cost of living adjustment for military members. However, they didn’t specify a figure in their draft version of the legislation and effectively left the decision up to Obama.

“I am strongly committed to supporting our uniformed service members, who have made such great contributions to our Nation over the past decade of war,” Obama said in his letter.

“As our country continues to recover from serious economic conditions affecting the general welfare, however, we must maintain efforts to keep our Nation on a sustainable fiscal course,” he added. “This effort requires tough choices, especially in light of budget constraints.”

Troop advocates have criticized military pay raises that aren’t consistent with the law. “Troops deserve the 2.3% pay raise,” Joyce Wessel Raezer, executive director of the National Military Family Association, an advocacy group based in Alexandria, Virginia, tweeted in May.

In its budget proposal, the Defense Department proposed limited pay raises for troops over the next five years, even though Congress sets the rate each year as part of the budget process. The spending plan calls for a raise of 1.3 percent in fiscal 2016 and 2017, 1.5 percent in fiscal 2018 and 2019, and 1.8 percent in 2020.

This is the ugly side of reality. the cost of laundry detergent goes up more than 1.3% each year. Indeed, the cost of living as a whole rises some 3 to 5 % on a regular basis, but to hear the elite politicians speak, those at the bottom of the fish bowl deserve only the minimum of considerations. Ask every Member of Congress if they are going to return or reject their automatic pay raises this year and in the future. If asked, they would tell you to “F” off. And, little do people realize that the money they hold in their campaign accounts can be claimed and used by them at any time. Our men and women who serve in the Military deserve better than 1.3%…..they deserve much more. Likewise, the 1.3% will also apply to every Federal Worker, retiree (Social Security, Military and Federal Employee), many of whom have contributed a substantial amount of their pay over their careers to government retirement programs – which the corrupt politicians have raped, pillaged and plundered – just like they have Social Security. As a qualified retiree under the Civil Service Retirement Program and a fully + Tenured contributor to Social Security, I am only eligible to collect 25% of my Social Security benefits each month, because Congress says that to collect both is “DOUBLE DIPPING.” What BS!! Millions of Federal Employee’s who were in the Military were also paying into Social Security via a 2nd job, etc. In my case, when I retired from the VA, I had over 60 quarters of Social Security paid in and I had to “BUY BACK” all of my Military time in order to qualify for full Federal retirement. Yet, when I did retire, I was stripped of over $650.00 in Social Security benefits, because of a law which said I and others in the same position, were “DOUBLE DIPPING.” For the millions of government workers in the same position, the Social Security Fund should be even more well funded, but, with the pay out to Illegal Aliens – who contributed NOTHING, every American will be lucky if they don’t see the age requirement rise and the benefit decrease. I say that we need to insist that our Men and Women in uniform, those who are serving in a civilian capacity and those who have retired from either career. We should not be punished for playing by the rules the government makes and the government should not always be changing the rules at the expense of the employee’s of the American people.
