Federal authorities are investigating Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL) for “suspicious activity” involving allowance money his House office receives to operate offices in Washington, D.C. and Illinois.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, authorities are investigating the possibility of “inappropriate expenditures” of the funds. House members received $1.4 to $2 million in 2010 for operating expenses.

Jackson’s spokesman had no comment on the matter and Jackson’s attorney would not comment when asked if the Congressman’s personal finances were being investigated.

This investigation was launched before Jackson stopped working and took a leave of absence due to exhaustion on June 10. He has since been treated for bi-polar disorder and has yet to return to Congress. The Sun-Times also noted the investigation has nothing to do with the alleged pay-to-play agreement Jackson had with former Illinois Governor Rob Blagojevich regarding President Barack Obama
