Showdown Between Texas and the Obama Administration
Did you know that Texas is the only state in the country that has a clause in their state constitution that says that they have the right to secede from the union? I wonder what would happen if they decided to choose to exercise that clause and declare themselves to be a free and sovereign country of their own?
I don’t think it will come to that, but they are on the verge of starting a political war that just may make some Texans start to think about seceding.
Thomas Suehs, Commissioner of Texas Health and Human Services signed a new state regulation that will formally prohibit all abortion providers including Planned Parenthood, from participating in the state’s Women’s Health Program. The new regulation was passed by Texas lawmakers and endorsed by Greg Abbott, Texas Attorney General.
The Obama administration does not like to be challenged or countermanded by anyone or any state. In typical federal fashion, they have threatened to revoke Texas’s federal funding of the state’s Medicaid program. Living up to one of the state’s unofficial mottos of ‘Don’t mess with Texas,’ the Lone Star state refused to bow down to the fed’s threat and if Texas continues to stand its ground, the Women’s Health Program will most likely be discontinued on March 14 when the new regulations take effect.
