Scientist deliberately ‘militarizes’ flu strain in deadly bioterrorism experiment

For years, health officials from around the world have been warning that the H5N1 avian flu virus, which is currently not a threat, will one day mutate into a deadly, pandemic strain. But now their predictions — or warnings, depending on how you look at it — could come true, as a European scientist has genetically altered H5N1 to effectively spread between mammals.

NPR reports that Dr. Ron Fouchier from Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands announced at a recent flu conference in Malta that he had discovered a way to make the avian flu virus more contagious. By deliberately modifying the virus’ genes, Dr. Fouchier was able to induce H5N1 transmission between ferrets, which represent the animal model typically used to study flu transmission between humans.

So in case you missed it, a virologist has deliberately altered the deadly H5N1 avian flu virus to become more transmissible between mammals — and he has done so in the name of studying the nature of the virus and, according to NPR, “what it is capable of.” Never mind that in its native state, H5N1 is incapable of doing much at all on a global scale. Now that it has been purposely altered, the virus could eventually have devastating global consequences should it ever be released into the wild.

And now… the rest of the story. …..

Re Article: Scientist deliberately ‘militarizes’ flu strain in deadly bio-terrorism experiment in the Netherlands genetically altered H5N1 to effectively spread between mammals.

Note below: SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTED (9-17-04) Washington University plan ned to infect monkeys with 1918 epidemic killer flu virus grown from tissue exhumed from victims.

Thanks to Dr. Ron Fouchier from the Erasmus Medical Centre (Netherlands), because everyone shares the air we breathe, we must now worry Dr. Fouchier’s contagious new flu virus might subsequently infect lab workers, leak or be released, copied or stolen by Terrorists and governments intending death to humans and or destroy important mammal food supply, e.g. cattle. Bio-labs make mistakes: Consider the number of alleged lab leaks and reported tainted vaccines. It is obvious terrorists and governments will seek access to information Re: Dr. Fouchier’s contagious mammal flu virus-experiment to duplicate it; and or develop (antidotes) against Dr. Fouchier’s contagious new mammal flu virus in order that they may release Fouchier’s flu-virus on populations—with lesser concern of virus contamination. It is not known if Dr. Fouchier’s developed an antidote; or how long Fouchier’s mammal flu-virus is contagious. Without a global antidote, Terrorists or a government could continuously expose human and other mammal populations to Dr. Fouchier’s creation, sickening and killing populations; decimate entire economies. Dr. Fouchier; any individual or Institution that participated in Dr. Fouchier’s intentional development of this contagious mammal flu virus might potentially be held legally and financially accountable should Fouchlier’s flu virus subsequently infect humans or harm important mammal food sources, e.g. beef, pork, sheep.

In addition to Dr. Fouchier’s intentionally created transmittable mammal-flu virus; prior on September 17, 2004 it was reported by the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER that University of Washington scientists planned to infect monkeys with a killer flu virus grown from tissue exhumed from victims of the 1918 epidemic that killed at least 40-million people worldwide. When you read this 2004 article one might prudently consider if the 1918 epidemic killer flu virus could be merged with Dr. Fouchier’s new contagious flu virus to more aptly spread it to contaminate humans.
The University of Washington received part of a $12.7 million grant funded largely from a bio-defense Congress appropriation:
