For the past few years http://www.snopescom/ has positioned itself, or others have labeled it, as the ‘tell-all final word’ on any comment, claim and email. But for several years people tried to find out who exactly was behind snopes.com. Only recently did Wikipedia get to the bottom of it – kinda makes you wonder what they were hiding. Well, finally we know. It is run by a husband and wife team – that’s right, no big office of investigators and researchers, no team of lawyers. It’s just a mom-and-pop operation that began as a hobby. David and Barbara Mikkelson in the San Fernando Valley of California started the website about 13 years ago and they have no formal background or experience in investigative research. After a few years it gained popularity believing it to be unbiased and neutral, but over the past couple of years people started asking questions who was behind it and did they have a selfish motivation?

And now… the rest of the story. …..

I researched the “claims” regarding who wrote what and found that most sources referenced are copy/paste jobs of the “Snopes Exposed” allegedly written by Alan Strong. In one pasted account it says that Reader’s Digest agrees with the exposure of Snopes.com. (at least that what I understood it to be saying), but when I went directly to reader’s digest and researched it myself, “snopes exposed” was not even mentioned in the article. The article about Snopes.com is very simply a typical article about the couple that started it and what they do. According to Reader’s Digest, they get their funding from the advertising done at their website. if not sure, go to the site and read it for yourself. http://www.rd.com/your-america-inspiring-people-and-stories/rumor-detectives-true-story-or-online-hoax/article122216.html or go to http://www.rd.com/ and search for “snopes” to see what they have. I wouldn’t mind corresponding directly with Alan Strong to check out his take on it.

It matters not whether they are investigators, they amply source everything to show that what they are writing is the truth.
