Immigration bill approved by Ariz. Senate panel

A slew of bills related to illegal immigrants have been proposed by Republican state legislators this year, many of them similar to failed efforts of previous sessions.

As a whole, the bills propose to make it a misdemeanor to hire or to be a day laborer – regardless of that laborer’s legal status, a felony for a business not to use E-Verify to confirm the immigration status of employees and a misdemeanor for illegal immigrants to be in the state at all. Several of the bills also would require local governments to enforce federal immigration laws.

This week, the first of those bills started making their way through legislative committees.
