Massachusetts Faces Costs of Big Health Care Plan
3/15/2009
Don’t be fooled into thinking there is a Republican way to do universal health care. Under Republican Governor Mitt Romney, Massachusetts three years ago adopted a plan that requires every member of the Bay State to buy health insurance, whether they need it or can afford it. State officials now recognize that health spending is out of control and the plan is not sustainable. The plan already faces a $4 billion gap for 2010, and the state is spending 42% more on health care than in 2006. Solution: open up competition, offer folks catastrophic policies with high deductibles in conjunction with health savings accounts they control. Put people back in charge of their own health care decisions and costs will come down in a hurry.
