Anchor Baby term not racial
This is in response to the Arizona Republic’s February 16th Opinion Column penned by James E. Garcia. For the sake of Argument, let’s agree the term “Anchor Baby” might offend some people. However, the term “Anchor Baby” could not in any way be construed as a racial term – it applies to anyone regardless of race.
Mr. Garcia’s commentary wants to persuade you with politically correct rhetoric that there is nothing wrong with immigrants entering the country without benefit of doing so legally.
He must understand that there are many upstanding American citizens from a wide spectrum of ethnic, political, social and religious backgrounds who believe that the 14th Amendment needs to be reviewed by the Courts. Some legal scholars believe that that amendment could reasonably interpreted to indicate that babies born on US soil would be citizens as long as at least one of the parents is a US citizen or legally present in the US.
If there is no problem with Garcia’s interpretation of the 14th Amendment, what is the harm of having a Supreme Court review. They would just consider the facts. It appears that instead of an open discussion, Mr. Garcia is trying to get reasonable critics to shut up.
It does not take a very sophisticated reader to realize that Mr. Garcia is not a constitutional scholar – he is an artist who wishes to persuade us with emotional images to abandon the idea that America is a nation of laws.
